|PROPER INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURES|
|February 23, 2001 |
A shaastra (scripture) should never become a shaastra (weapon). The knowledge contained in scriptures should never be used to fight or argue with another person, but only to upliftment oneself.
Second, the proper interpretation of scriptures is also critical. For example, throughout the Vachanamrut, Swaminarayan Bhagwan explains that God is saakaara (with a form). If one comes across a scripture that describes God as being niraakaara (formless), one should abide to Swaminarayan Bhagwans's teaching that God, in fact, always has a form. In such cases, one should learn to be selective (like a vegetarian that properly discriminates what foods to eat). Also, one can come to understand with what perspective certain statements are made.
