Per the Bhagavat (given in the 'Bhugol-khagol' letter by Swaminarayan Bhagwan and in Vachanamrut Jetalpur 5), Nara-Narayan is the principal deity of worship for Bharatkhand or India. Swaminarayan Bhagwan thus installed the moorti of Nara-Narayan in the very first Swaminarayan temple in Ahmedabad. In order to consolidate such faith in His manifest form, Swaminarayan Bhagwan talks about Nara-Narayan in several Vachanamruts. In Vachanamrut Jetalpur 4, Swaminarayan Bhagwan explains, "You have currently attained Shri Purushottam who is incarnate in the form of Shri NaraNarayan Rushi." In Jetalpur 5, Swaminarayan Bhagwan explains, "The Lord of Akshardham, Shri Purushottam, being born to Dharmadev and Murtidevi (who is called Bhakti) manifests in Badrikashram and performs austerities in the form of Shri NaraNarayan Rushi. To denounce the beliefs of hypocrites, to destroy traditions of adharma and nurture traditions of dharma (religion), and to propagate bhakti (devotion) along with dharma (religion), gnyaana (knowledge), and vairaagya (detachment) on this earth in kali-yuga (the present "dark age"), Shri NaraNarayan Rushi was born to Shri Dharmadev and Bhakti in the form of Narayanmuni [another name given to Sahajanand Swami by Ramanand Swami]." Swaminarayan Bhagwan continues, "My repeating the importance of Shri NaraNarayandev is that that same Shri NaraNarayan, who is Shri Krishna Purushottam and who resides in Akshardham, Himself sits daily in this assembly."
In Skand Puran 18/43-44 (in the Vasudev Mahatmya in the Vishnu Khand), Vyasji states that in kali-yuga, God will be born to a family of Samvedi Brahmins, to Dharmadev and Bhaktimata (the parents of Swaminarayan Bhagwan) via Nara-Narayan. Accordingly, once, Durvasa Muni, famous for his quick temper, visited the residence of Nara-Narayan in Badrikashram. Everyone present there was engrossed in listening to the discourse, and thus did not show respect or offer Durvasa a seat. He became enraged and cursed them to descend to earth. God accepted the curse to manifest on the earth via Dharmadev and Bhaktimata.
