In Shikshapatri verse 114, Swaminarayan Bhagwan explains, "Without devotion and satsanga, even a learned person descends on the spiritual path."
Vishvamitra however argued with Vashishtha Rushi that penance was greater than satsanga. Thus, they both went to Sheshnaag (the divine cobra on which Lord Vishnu rests). Sheshnaag first asked that one of them help lift the burden of carrying the earth on its head. Vishvamitra offered his thousands of years of penance, but the earth did not lift. Then, Vashishtha offered the merit he had gained from just one lava (1/150th of a second) of satsanga, and the earth lifted! In this way Sheshnaag explained the value of satsanga to Vishvamitra.
