PARAMCHAITANYANAND SWAMI

During a pilgrimage to Dvarka, Ajitsinhji (distant cousin of Harisinhji, the chieftan of Shiyani near Limbdi) heard about Neelkanth Varni in Loj. When he came there, he found Neelkanth Varni serving under Muktanand Swami. When Ramanand Swami returned to Loj, he initiated Ajitsinhji and named him Paramchaitanyanand Swami (also called Chaitanyanand Swami). In Swami Ni Vato 14/206, Paramchaitanyanand Swami is described as the incarnation of Dattatreya.

Given in Swami Ni Vato 9/129, when Aksharanand Swami* was named as the mahanta (head) of the Vadtal temple, out of jealousy, Paramchaitanyanand Swami expressed how could a devotee who became a saint just yesterday become a mahanta? Upset, he left for Dharmapur. [After which he met Kushalkuverbai.] At the time, 10 saints under Paramchaitanyanand Swami also followed after him. Paramchaitanyanand Swami however told them, "I am leaving due to my ego, why are you leaving? Maharaj is God and liberation is also there." When Swaminarayan Bhagwan heard about the returning saints, He expressed, "The one who left is a [true] devotee, while the returning saints do not understand." [In Vachanamrut Gadhada First 63, Nrusinhanand Swami asked, "What kind of thoughts arise in a person who has a deficiency in his faith in God?" After Swaminarayan Bhagwan replied, Paramchaitanyaanand Swami asked, "What type of thoughts does a person with fully developed faith in God have?"]

Gifts would go to Paramchaitanyanand Swami before they were received by Swaminarayan Bhagwan [ref. Swami Ni Vato 6/165 and 9/128]. (This displayed the respect he was given and his liking for material things.) With the example of Paramchaitanyanand Swami, Gunatitanand Swami explains that only the great (like Kripanand Swami) can recognize their own svabhaava (crude nature). Given in Swami Ni Vato 11/3, Paramchaitanyanand Swami also admits of his rajoguni nature of liking fine material things.

After Swaminarayan Bhagwan passed away, Paramchaitanyanand Swami stayed in Gadhada. By the company and discourses of Balmukundanand Swami and Gopalanand Swami, he changed [ref. Swami Ni Vato 2/142, 9/128, 9/219, 9/285, and 14/62]. In fact, Paramchaitanyanand Swami said, "For 12 years I was a guru, for 12 years I was a sadguru, but today I have become a satsangee!" [ref. Swami Ni Vato 6/165 and 11/85]; and, "If I had not listened to Gopalanand Swami's discourses, I would have had to take 2-3 more lives" [ref. Swami Ni Vato 11/15].


*Although a kshatriya from a large town, Aksharanand Swami came to Vadtal to become a tyaagi. But Swaminarayan Bhagwan asked if he wanted to do what God desired, or what he desired? Then Swaminarayan Bhagwan instructed Aksharanand Swami to plow the farm of Kashidas of Bochasan. God called him after three years, initiated him as Aksharanand Swami, and appointed him as the head of the Vadtal temple [ref. Swami Ni Vato 9/129].
