In Vachanamrut Sarangpur 13, in response to Svayamprakashanand Swami's statement, Swaminarayan Bhagwan explains that faith in God comes through the scriptures. On the other hand, if one's conviction in God is based on one's own mind, it will not last. Swaminarayan Bhagwan explains, "The scriptures describe an endless variety of divine actions and incidents of God - thus, regardless of which action God performs, it will never be outside of scriptures. Therefore, only one who has faith in the scriptures is able to develop unshakeable faith in God, and only such a person attains liberation. In addition, such a person would never deviate from dharma."

Amongst other places, in Bhagavad Gita 16/24, Krishna Bhagwan explains to follow the path given in scriptures: "tasmat chastram pramanam te karyakarya-vyavasthitau jnatva sastra-vidhanoktam karma kartum iharhasi."
