    OLD GUJARAT

    Old Gujarat map:

Gujarat was made up of a total of 396 sub-states. Gadhada, Lord Swaminarayan's principal place of stay in Gujarat, was a sub-state ruled jointly by Dada Khachar and his uncle Jiva Khachar (each owning 12 villages). Gadhada was additionally under the jurisdiction of Bhavnagar state, ruled by a Rajput king.

Also in Gujarat at the time, the Gaekwads had made Vadodara their base, and the Peshwas, Ahmedabad. British rule (that extended from Surat in 1800), from 1802 oversaw Gaekwad power in Vadodara, entered Kathiawad in 1807 (making a treaty with the Kathi chiefs via the Gaekwads), entered Jamnagar in 1812 (making a treaty with chief Jam Jasaji via the Gaekwads), entered Kach in 1816 (making a treaty with the Rav), from 1817 oversaw Peshwa power in Ahmedabad, and finally entered Junagadh in 1822 (with the Nawab seceding power to the British).

Note: Gadhada lies in Kathiawad, an area of the Bhavnagar state. Kathiawad derives its name from a clan known as the Kathis (consisting of Walas, Khumans, and Khachars), who were mainly village chieftains. Colonials however called the whole of Saurashtra Kathiawad.
